Pape was first mentioned in writings in 1253. After World War I, Pape was one of the largest fishing villages in Kurzeme, with more than 100 houses.

Since 2003, the Pape Nature Park has been here, where you can find unique natural ecosystems, beautiful landscapes, and interesting sights: Baltic Sea coast with dunes, Lake Pape, Nida high bog, wild horses, and aurochs. Between Lake Pape and the sea is one of the largest bird migration sites in Latvia. Here is an ornithological station, where migratory birds are counted and ringed. There are three nature trails and a mobile app to help you navigate and get to know the park better.
