Nīca was first mentioned in writings in 1560. It is the largest of the nearby villages – from 2009 to 2021 it was the centre of the district. One of the most Latvian regions of Latvia. Nīca is proud of its magnificent national costume, one of the most popular in Latvia. Elizabeth II of England once received this national costume as an official wedding gift from the Republic of Latvia. The mother of former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga comes from Nīca, that is why she also dresses up in the Nīca national costume. It has a tourist information centre, three shops, two cafés, one restaurant, a clinic, hairdressing salons, a children’s playground, a volleyball court, and a sports hall with a gym.
