Storms change the coastline every year – the sea takes its share of Barnāti Cape piece by piece.
The house of the “Veckrūmi” by the sea shows the man’s struggle with the sea. The construction debris gathered and put there by the owners is not extremely attractive, but so far it has managed to protect the house. In recent years, the sea has taken several meters from the territory of Bernāti Cape. The oldest inhabitants of Bernāti still remember the house and the potato field in the place where the sea has been already for many years now.
In October 1967, the storm’s speed reached more than 40 m/s. Not only the forest suffered, but also the equipment of the Bernāti fishermen’s collective farm “Bolshevik” was completely destroyed un it was never restored. Every year, storms take away a part of the dunes, and many a stately maritime pine loses its battle to the sea.
